Dinamo - Werder 2:3
Spot-on Bremen keep Dinamo at bay
Werder Bremen held their nerve to book a return to the UEFA Champions League group stage with an exciting 5-3 aggregate triumph though they were pushed all the way at the Maksimir Stadium by a determined NK Dinamo Zagreb outfit.
Diego spot-kicks
Coming into the game with a precarious 2-1 lead after the first encounter in Germany, Bremen enjoyed a dream start when Diego converted a 13th-minute penalty. Yet Ognjen Vukojević capitalised on a defensive error to reduce the Croatian side's overall deficit and it set the tone for the evening as the visitors struggled to put the tie beyond reach. Boubacar Sanogo restored their two-goal aggregate advantage, then Luka Modrić hit back from the spot for the home team before Diego scored yet another penalty midway through the half to finally settle the tie.
Vukojević strike
Diego had proved equally efficient 57 minutes earlier when he neatly slotted in from eleven metres after Hugo Almeida had elicited a foul in the middle of a crowded Dinamo box. It temporarily silenced the majority of the 40,000 crowd, but they regained their voice eight minutes later when Vukojević pounced on a loose pass from Frank Baumann and fired in courtesy of a deflection off the former Germany international. Yet that goal came against the run of play and Bremen quickly regained their composure and then, six minutes before the interval, the lead.
Sanogo effort
Hugo Almeida worked space for a powerful effort from the left that German goalkeeper Georg Koch could only parry into the path of Sanogo, who made no mistake. It left the home side needing to score three times to win through to the group stage, and although Modrić pulled one back after Boško Balaban had been brought down, Diego restored Bremen's lead on the night with 20 minutes remaining after Etto was fouled to finally extinguish home hopes.

Osaka WC, 100m final: 1. Gay... 7. Osovnikar
Tyson Gay outclasses Asafa Powell in the final stages of the men's 100m final
In a 100-meters final that delivered all it promised Sunday, Gay was slower out of the blocks. Once his legs got pumping, he caught and surged past Asafa Powell, Jamaica to claim his first gold medal at a major international championship in 9.85 seconds.
"After 60 meters I saw that I could catch him — and it worked," Gay said. "I stayed relaxed and believed in my top speed even though I had a bad start."
Powell, sensing defeat, was passed by Derrick Atkins of Bahamas at the tape in 9.91. Powell was third in 9.96, and even though he is co-holder of the world record at 9.77, admitted he ran scared.
"I panicked. I felt him coming on," Powell said. "That slowed me down ... I made a big mistake."
Gay, unbeaten this year coming into the championships, felt his composure beginning to slip Sunday morning. "I was wondering, 'Will people still respect me if I lose?'" he said. "I was wondering if anyone would still love me."
A call from his coach, Lance Brauman, who is nearing the end of a prison sentence for embezzlement, theft and mail fraud, calmed his nerves.
"This morning he called me around 11. He told me basically that he knows in the morning when he gets up that I'll be world champion," Gay said.
Some reassuring words from his mother, Daisy Gay Lowe, also helped.
"She talked to me and made me a believer. That's something I wasn't doing," he said.
Watched under a full moon by Japanese Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and some 40,000 fans at the Nagai stadium, Gay pumped his arms, beat his chest and shouted in delight in the victory that ended weeks of nervous preparations.
Powell showed little emotion — his sullen demeanor said it all.
Gay, regularly slower out of the blocks than Powell, had feared a false start, which would put him even more on edge. But the race went off smoothly. And with his head wobbling from side to side, Gay hit his groove.
But once he hits his stride, there is no stopping Gay. It is why he now is an overwhelming favorite to win the 200, too. With a bit of luck, he could also add a title in the 400 relays, where another battle with Powell looms.
"I'm just going to try to ice, get a massage, spend a little time with my family and really focus on the 200 now," Gay said. The 200 heats are set for Tuesday.
Both Gay and Powell were desperate to win their first global title Sunday and gain status as the favorite going into the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
"Next year I will get him," Powell vowed. "But for now, I am very disappointed."
Powell barely showed emotion on the track_ a sullen demeanor that said it all. He complained his blocks stumbled at the start.

Bruce Lee from Zagora
Golden Sticks - first movie in indepedent Montenegro
Boris Ivković, better known by his stage name Bore Lee is a Croatian martial arts enthusiast and amateur filmmaker from Sinj.
Ship-builder by trade and a great fan of Bruce Lee, he studied martial arts from an early age. In 1994 he began displaying his skills on short low budget martial arts films that were recorded on a VHS camera. Gradually, those films became underground sensations in his native town of Sinj and the shooting of these films on city streets became a popular spectacle.
Bore Lee's fame reached Zagreb when a group of four filmmakers decided to make a film with Bore, titled Bore Lee-U Kandzama Velegrada (In the Claws of the Big City) 2004, a low budget martial arts parody that later turned out to be the most popular trash film in Croatian cinema. In 2005, once again with the same 4 filmakers and this time with a slightly better low budget, Bore Lee appeared in his 8th film titled Bore Lee-"Cuvaj se Sinjske Ruke" Bore Lee: Deadly Sinjs!.
Also, with this movie, Bore Lee, became famous all over Croatia, and very soon, in neighbouring countries ( Bore Lee was invited in Montenegro, where he also made his movie, "Golden Sticks" - this is videospot from that movie, authors of music are hip-hop stars from Montenegro - Mc Marko & Mc Niggor ).
Some his movies featured some prominent Croatian celebrities, as well as plenty of pop culture references and healthy humour (although film tries to be serious). As a result, it soon became one of the most popular films in recent Croatian history. In later movies, Bore Lee attracted more Croatian celebrities.

Vessel Marathon - Neretva River, Croatia
Vessel Marathon (Maraton ladja) is an amateur, sporting competition which involves the racing of ladje (vessels native to the Lower Neretva River which flows throughthe Republic of Croatia). It is held annually on the second Saturday in August, on a course 22.5 km long, under the direct patronage of the President of the Republic of Croatia.
Ladje were used by the old Neretva pirates of yesteryear, who terrorised these parts in the 10th century. With the modernization of life, ladje have almost become technologically redundant, and as a result became a relic. In many cases they could be found ruined and 'shipwrecked', half submerged in various parts of the many tributaries.
So as to preserve the significance and history of the ladje, in 1998 the very first race involving these relics from the past was organized from Metkovic to Ploce. At the start of the inaugural race, there were a total of 18 local crews. It so captured the imagination of the locals that with each year a new record number of entries is received. As for the old half-ruined ladje lying peacefully in the rivers, they were awaken from their slumber and repaired to live another day in the following year's race.
Since the old ladje were all of different dimensions, and so that all competitors would race in vessels of the same size, in 2004 new custom-made ladje were built, which would be used specifically for the Maraton ladje.
Each rowing crew consists of 10 rowers, a drummer and a cox, or oarsmen. There can be a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 persons in each squad. Anyone who is willing may form part of the crew: men, women, children.
The competing ladja must be wooden, comprise a traditional shape and must meet the official competition rules as far as actual dimensions are concerned. That is, the length must be between 7 and 8.2 meters, the width between 2.45 and 2.8 meters, the depth is 70cm, with 23 spokes or wooden rods. The actual oars themselves must also be made of wood

A Capella - Klapa Neverin (8 songs)
Klapa Neverin is a woman "a cappela" band from Kastel Luksic.
So called Dalmatian "klapa" songs are at the core of dalmatian music. "Klapa" in Dalmatian dialect means company or group, while in musical terms it refers to five-to-eight member ensembles. Traditionally, the ensemble consists only of male voices, but nowadays we witness the emergence of many mixed and female ensembles with a varying number of members.
Nevertheless, its basic characteristic and distinction are, and remain, solely vocal harmony-singing, only rarely discreetly and quietly accompanied by instruments. Part-singing, usually in four parts, is originally spontaneous, performed by the ear and not by following note recordings, so harmonization is simple. A low-pitched accompaniment is stressed by a larger number of singers, giving the songs a more intimate atmosphere.
Klapa songs have slow, free rhythm and are often without any measure mark (libero). Sometimes it even includes complex measures. The songs are usually quite serenade-like love songs, usually addressing a beloved girl. However, marry and satirical songs also exist. Regardless of a theme, they are always in a major key.
It is, therefore, not surprising that in the preservation of original folk music composers and musicologists-folklorists invested most of their effort into this particular segment. Consequently, a special annual festival of amateur Dalmatian singing was established in Omis - Festival of the Dalmatian klapas. In only few years, this festival has grown into a cultural institution of great importance and reputation. The lack of original records and the limited number of available songs prompted the composers to write more complex harmonizations to existing songs, as well as many entirely new songs, still respecting the tradition

Hajduk - Sampdoria 0:1
Hajduk feel heel of destiny
UC Sampdoria left Croatia with a 1-0 win after their goal led a charmed life early on in their UEFA Cup second qualifying round first leg at HNK Hajduk Split.
Deflected winner
Argentinian Hugo Campagnaro deflected Sergio Volpi's free-kick into the Hajduk net with his heel after 42 minutes to give the Genoa side the only goal of the game just two minutes after coming on as a substitute for the injured Pietro Accardi. However, Hajduk were left to rue their luck - and their finishing - after creating a number of presentable chances.
Off the woodwork
A crowd of 35,000 at the Poljud Stadium sensed a goal early on as Hajduk were awarded an indirect free-kick in the penalty area after ten minutes. Romanian midfielder Florin Cernat drove the set-piece against the crossbar before Srdjan Andrić saw his deflected shot hit the woodwork too. Four minutes later another Cernat effort from the edge of the box struck the post
The visitors seemed content to settle for a 1-0 win and did not push too hard for a second goal but nearly got one anyway as substitute Vicenzo Montella, on loan from AS Roma, drew a decent save from Balić late on. Nonetheless Samp are in a strong position for the home return in a fortnight.

Werder Bremen - Dinamo Zagreb 2:1
Werder strike late for 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb
Werder Bremen needed a long-range blast from Daniel Jensen four minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb at the Weserstadion in the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifier on Wednesday.
Bosko Balaban had given the Croatian champions a deserved lead at the end of the first half, touching in from six metres to convert Mario Mandzukic's ball in from the right.
That acted as a spur for the Germans, who came out with a new attitude at the start of the second half.
Substitute Hugo Almeida struck the equaliser almost immediately when he raced through and scored on the rebound, after the keeper had blocked his first effort.
The visitors had plenty of chances to go ahead themselves before a thumping late effort from Danish international Jensen gave Werder a slim advantage to take to the away leg on Aug. 29.

Goran Ivanisevic scores goal
Croat soccer star Zvonimir Boban laced up his cleats again in a testimonial match that saw another Croatian sports great — tennis ace Goran Ivanisevic — steal the show by scoring a goal against some of Boban's best-known teammates.
Boban was joined by soccer greats Marco Van Basten, Lothar Matthaeus and Franco Baresi, as well as other stars — some active, others retired — in a match honoring the Croat player.
Near the end of the match, Boban left a field to a standing ovation and Ivanisevic replaced him. The crowd welcomed him euphorically, only to explode with joy when Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon last year, scored for Croatia minutes after joining play

ALKA - KNIGHTS GAME
The Alka is held to commemorate the victory of the outnumbered defenders of the old city of Sinj, against the multiples times more numerous and stronger Ottoman army in 1715.
Around 700 defenders held out against a siege of the Sinj fort, and according to historical sources, with their courage, fighting spirit and determination, the resisted the Ottoman army, which according to the same sources, had up to 60,000 soldiers.
The legend says that the defenders were helped in their battle with the appearance of the blessed Virgin Mary, so the defenders gathered gold and framed her picture with it.
In honour of the great victory, the citizens of Sinj, with permission from the Venetian authorities, founded the knight games, Alka, a unique competition of jousting knights in Europe, similar to knight tournaments from the middle ages, which has been kept as a tradition for nearly three centuries. According to sources, similar games have been held in Makarska and in other places in Dalmatia and Istria, but it is the Alka that is of great value for surviving until today, and has become a world attraction, because it has been held with unchanged rules, in Sinj, for 292 years.

Sorry for Kung Fu
Sorry for Kung Fu (2004)
Starring: Daria Lorenci, Filip Rados Director: Ognjen Svilicic
"Sorry for Kung Fu" is a dark comedy showing the tragedy of life, but also shows the natural humor of Croatian rural element. Places that the director Svilicic chose for filming are great in their nudity, and actors are very natural and expressive. What we can appreciated the most is a keen contrast between humorous and tragic element.
Short plot: When young Mira comes back to her modest home after time spent in Germany, and also pregnant she will be faced with the harsh life back with her parents who desperately try to find her a husband suitable for her delicate situation, of course against her will. Tis will lead to numerous absurd and tragic situations, especially after the child is born.
